Mathematical Journey through Al-Andalus Highlights Arab Scientific Legacy and Strengthens Cultural Dialogue in São Paulo

Last Monday, April 14, the Instituto Cervantes hosted the opening of the exhibition Mathematical Journey through Al-Andalus, organized by the Instituto da Cultura Árabe, Fundación Descubre – Consejería de Universidad, Investigación e Innovación, the Embassy of Spain, the Junta de Andalucía, and AECID, in partnership with the Government of the State of São Paulo and the São Paulo City Government. The event was supported by IMPA, UNIFESP, and the Edward Said Institute, with sponsorship from FAMBRAS, International Halal Academy, Nasser Advogados, the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, and Casa Árabe.

FAMBRAS was represented by its Director of Projects and Institutional Relations, Delduque Martins, who also serves as Secretary-General of the International Halal Academy. In his remarks, he highlighted the importance of showcasing the historical contribution of the Arab people to the development of Western thought.

“It is important to bring culture and science forward, highlighting the contribution of the Arabs in the 10th century, a period that was truly a cradle of knowledge. We brought this content to Brazil so that this heritage can become part of people’s everyday lives. Mathematics has roots in the Arabic language, and FAMBRAS plays a role in highlighting this contribution to Western culture.”

The Instituto da Cultura Árabe was represented by its president, Natalia Calfat, who emphasized the exhibition’s role in challenging stereotypes about the Arab world and recognizing its presence in Western society.

“We are delighted to welcome this exhibition because it reinforces our commitment to multiculturalism and interfaith coexistence. Al-Andalus was a space of encounter. The exhibition offers a true immersion and demonstrates how the past continues to be present in areas such as engineering, architecture, and mathematics in an accessible way for the public.”

The Instituto Cervantes was represented by its director, Daniel Gallego, who highlighted the importance of disseminating knowledge about the period of Al-Andalus.

“Promoting awareness of this period is essential to understanding how the Iberian Peninsula historically stood out in fields such as science, architecture, astronomy, and literature.”

The Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce was represented by Secretary-General Mohamad Mourad and Vice President of Marketing and Communications Silvia Antibas. The institution emphasized the importance of disseminating the cultural legacy of Al-Andalus.

“This partnership with FAMBRAS reinforces the relevance of Arab culture, which has historical roots predating immigration, already being present through Arab-Muslim navigators who brought fundamental knowledge and influences.”

Nasser Advogados was also represented at the event by founding partner Rabih Nasser, who highlighted the importance of initiatives aimed at promoting cultural appreciation.

“Supporting projects that promote integration among different peoples and cultures is essential. The exhibition addresses a period of great historical richness, marked by coexistence among religions and the production of knowledge, which reinforces its importance to society.”

Initiatives such as Mathematical Journey through Al-Andalus highlight the relevance of the Arab scientific and cultural legacy in the development of global knowledge. FAMBRAS reaffirms its commitment to preserving and disseminating this heritage, contributing to stronger intercultural dialogue and broader access to knowledge in Brazil.
